Commission a Portrait
Richard’s work has gained recognition both nationally and internationally. In 1983, a collector commissioned him to spend three weeks in Alaska where he began work on a series of nine landscapes, establishing his expertise as a landscape artist as well as a portrait painter. He has painted nearly 400 portraits including numerous CEOs of industry, presidents of universities and political leaders as well as family and individual portraits. In 1987, he painted Cardinal Humberto Medeiros for the Catholic University of Portugal. At the unveiling in Lisbon, he was awarded the medal "Benemerito". In 1992, Richard was commissioned to paint a portrait of a Japanese couple and spent three months living and traveling in Japan. Other notable commissioned portraits include Presidential candidate Mitt Romney; Nobel Laureates Paul Samuelson and Phillip Sharp; Father McGivney, Founder of the Knights of Columbus; Secretary of the Navy James Webb, Jr.; Secretary of Labor Robert Reich; US Senators Tom McIntyre and Judd Gregg and actor Ethan Hawke.
Richard will speak by telephone or email with the client to determine the details of the portrait. This includes desired mood, size, clothing, objects to be included in the portrait, schedules, and where the portrait will ultimately hang. Richard and the client then meet. He can travel to the client's location or they can meet at Richard's studio. Richard takes photographs and paints a color study from life. Using these materials, he works with the client to reach an agreement on pose and composition. Richard also has the client pose for a final session where he finishes the portrait from life.
